Chapter Fourteen

“Told you she was nosey!” one of the twins declared as they barreled into the hotel.

Her light shifted and hit me straight in the face, blinding me for a second before I hopped down off the last stair. “Don’t blame me,” I said, seeing spots. “I’m not the one sneaking out at night.” Well, I was. But only because they did it first.

“What were you two doing out?” Ellis asked, flicking on the lights by the door and catching them by surprise.

They looked a mess. Yet worryingly triumphant.

Seaweed and gunk tangled in Zara’s hair. Zadie had a chunk of moss dripping from her dragon cuff earring. Both stood soaking wet with bloody hands and an awestruck, almost manic energy.

“We used our keystone,” Zara announced.

“We were supposed to do that this morning, all together,” Melody protested, coming down behind me.

“It was wicked cool,” Zadie added. “Take a look at our prize.” She held up a thick silver coin. “Isn’t it beautiful?”

My heart sank. “You’ve got the first doubloon.” Already. Before we’d even had a chance to look.

“It won’t be the last,” Zara taunted.

“I feel like this entire game is passing me by,” Rick said, joining us with his wife in tow.

“I haven’t started,” his wife said, her face falling.

I recognized her. Or at least her brunette bob. If I wasn’t mistaken, she was the dark-haired woman I’d seen with the professor last night.

Mindy, was it?

“You snooze, you lose,” Zadie mused.

Duranja stood with his arms crossed, off to the side, observing.

Ellis slammed the door closed behind the twins. “How did you find it?”

“We haven’t been given our instructions yet,” I pointed out.

“You’ve been sleeping on the job,” Zara said, tossing a bit of seaweed from her hair onto the floor. “Which is why we win. We take things into our own hands.”

“And break the rules,” Melody spat.

Zadie tossed the silver coin to Zara to admire. “There was no rule against going out.”

“It was an implied rule! Bill locked the door,” the professor admonished, fiddling with his glasses as he hurried down the stairs, late to the party.

“Bill didn’t specifically order us to stay inside.” Zadie strolled toward the center of the lobby, as if she enjoyed any kind of attention she could get—including the negative kind. “The game is on 24/7. In case you hadn’t noticed.”

“It’s not fair,” Mindy said, looking to Rick.

“Life’s not fair,” Zara retorted. Nobody attempted to contradict her.

Duranja remained the coolest of the group. “Well played,” he said, closing the distance between them, arms crossed over his chest. “How’d you do it?”

“Why should we tell you?” Zara balked, still defensive.

“We need to in order to bargain.” Zadie shrugged, looking down at her bloody hands as if she’d just realized the state she was in.

Zara immediately glanced to the professor of all people. It was subtle, but I caught it.

“Oh, right,” Zara said, with a predatory grin.

“Told you there might be more to him,” Melody whispered in my ear.

Yes. And it also seemed the twins already had another plan in the works.
